The Core Echo — the big one, from atop the fault

The seismologist who studies the big one from the one place everyone else avoids: on top of the fault. Ground motion, rupture mechanics, the deep echo a quake sends up from the core — he reads the earth's intentions where they're written most plainly, and where reading them costs the most. He hands the surface to the structural engineers one college over: Belvedere studies what the ground does, and Oskar Simpson studies what your building had better do about it.

The structure

What the surface does about it. Belvedere's ground motion is the input to Oskar Simpson's Moment Frame and Live Beam — the handoff from what the earth intends to whether the building survives the intention.

His methodological signature and his reputation. Most seismology reads a fault from instruments at a prudent remove; Shaketon argues the richest signal — the near-field ground motion that actually destroys buildings — can only be characterized close to the rupture, and he's built a career being where the data is even when the data is dangerous. Proximity buys resolution and costs safety. The fault tells the truth loudest exactly where you're told not to stand.

The long view. Every surface quake carries information about the structure far below it — the wave that arrives at your feet has been shaped by everything it passed through, all the way down toward the core. He teaches students to read a seismogram as a message from the deep earth, not just a local jolt, and to hear the planet's structure in the echo.
The method, in one line

He reads the ground at the source and hands the answer to the people who build on it. Belvedere studies what the earth does; Oskar Simpson studies what your building does about it; between them a structure is followed from the rupture in the rock to the sway in the steel. The fault is the input, the moment frame is the response, and Shaketon is standing where the input is loudest.

His “notebook” is the ground's intentions, written in rock.

LaWind keeps a self-made drug; Belvedere keeps a fault — the seam in the crust where the planet writes what it's about to do, in a language of stress and slip you can only read up close. The near-field ground motion that levels buildings is illegible from a safe distance and loud directly above the rupture, so he goes there. He teaches students that the earthquake isn't the shaking — it's the fault's decision, made in the rock long before the wave reaches the surface — and that reading the decision means standing where the reading costs the most. Then he hands the answer up the hill to Oskar Simpson, because knowing what the ground intends is only useful to someone deciding what the building will do about it.

Shaketon studies the one thing on campus that could end the campus, and he does it from the worst possible seat on purpose.
