This is a convergence lab in the Sledgehammer Room: two unrelated 2025-26 results, Earth's geodynamo and the exoplanet fields, swinging at the same core assumption from opposite sides. The shield
Earth's geodynamo: a molten, spinning core generating the field that deflects the solar wind and keeps the atmosphere from being stripped away. Mars lost its dynamo, and then it lost its air. The stakes of a magnetic field are the stakes of a living world.
The exoplanet
A distant world's magnetic signature, inferred at the edge of what instruments can resolve. When the geodynamo result and the exoplanet result point at the same conclusion, Chantel's first move isn't celebration — it's suspicion. She swings the hammer to see if the agreement breaks.

Her methodological core, and the reason her lab lives in the Sledgehammer Room. Two independent findings landing on the same answer feels like confirmation — and is the single easiest way for a field to fool itself, because a shared hidden assumption produces a false convergence indistinguishable from a real one until you go looking. She teaches the discipline of attacking your own agreement: what would have to be true for both results to be right, and is that the thing you actually checked? A convergence you didn't try to break is a convergence you don't get to trust.

Convergence is the most seductive thing in science and the most dangerous: two independent findings pointing the same way feels like proof, and is exactly how a shared hidden assumption smuggles a whole field into being confidently wrong. Her method is to ask what would have to be true for both to be right, and then check that — the assumption underneath the agreement. A convergence that survives the hammer is a discovery. One that doesn't was never anything but two mistakes shaking hands.
