Lester’s Method — v0.2

An interactive lab teaching the tool-building methodology that produced the Pulse Suite. Named for Lester Pearson (Zero Squad, Three Gauge Test) and for the folder this work lives in: Lester’s Legal Sized Yellow Note Pad. The methodology was not invented; it was surfaced from the work by reading the folder cold and asking: what did Travis actually do?

The lab’s thesis: you might already have everything except the realization that you can ship it yourself. Travis spent a year with completed XAI Bundle specs sitting on a shelf, waiting for someone else to build them. When he realized the browser was the platform and Cloudflare Pages was the deploy target and federal APIs were free to hit from the client, the year ended. Eight tools shipped in the next six months. Step 0 is the move that unlocked the rest.

Three acts

• Act I — The Tour. Four case studies. Each one: the May 2025 XAI Bundle spec on the shelf, the May 2026 Pulse Suite tool that shipped. The transformation between them.
• Act II — The Method. The nine steps surfaced from the suite. Step 0 first because it was the one that mattered.
• Act III — Your Tool. A workbook. You pick a topic, fill in the fields, and the lab generates two files: a build prompt you can paste into Claude or any AI assistant, and a project README modeled on the SnapBasin / Watershed Pulse pattern.

What the lab does not do

The lab does not build the tool for you. It briefs an AI to build it with you. That distinction is the whole point. The methodology is portable; the tool is yours.

Suite context

Section 4.10.10 (College X — ELUSK Engineering, Building 10) with shadow at 4.0.10 (College 0 — Freshman Studies). Sibling to The Standing Question (4.9.9), The Multi-Perspective History Lab (4.5.10), The Other Side (4.4.10), and The Echo and the Show (4.6.10). Same family of mechanics — stage + ledger, the student is the apparatus — adapted to a different audience. The philosophy labs ask you to commit. This lab asks you to ship.

Built by Travis Jenkins (User Zero) with Claude. The methodology is User Zero’s, surfaced from his actual work. The workbook is the lab’s contribution — a structured handoff document that turns curiosity into a buildable brief.

Where the methodology came from

The XAI Bundle archive (the shelf year)

Filed at MPC Universe FINAL/Education/Birmingham 2/Birmingham/XAI bundles/. Six bundle specifications written by Travis Jenkins in May 2025 and addressed to xAI: Earthquake Insight Monitor, Climate Researcher, Citizen Scientist, Data Scientist, Space Observer, Quantum Analysis. Each spec includes purpose, features (with size estimates in MB), user-run scenarios, togglable options, backend features, and pricing tiers. They sat on a shelf for a year waiting for xAI or some other platform to build them.

The Pulse Suite (the year that ended)

Filed at MASTER/Lester’s Legal Sized Yellow Note Pad/tools/. Twelve folders, 438 files, 343 MB. Built between roughly May 2026 and the present. The SnapBasin folder includes the canonical CROSS_SUITE_TODO.md, which is the suite’s consistency doctrine.

The transformation map

• Earthquake Insight Monitor (XAI spec) → QuakeSim (Pulse Suite tool with NBI bridge data integration)
• Climate Researcher / Macro climate (XAI spec) → SnapBasin + Watershed Pulse + Stream Environment Pulse
• Space Observer (XAI spec) → Sky Sentinel + Space Pulse
• Citizen Scientist (XAI spec) → retroactively identified as iNaturalist. Travis wrote the bundle without knowing iNaturalist already existed — the app turns out to be the same idea, shipped earlier by a larger team. A clean negative result: the methodology was correct; someone else got there first. The pattern is worth remembering: when you have an idea, check whether it’s already shipping somewhere; if it is, study how, then point at it.
• Data Scientist (XAI spec) → intentionally parked. Travis chose not to build it: no appetite for backend infrastructure or hosted data, and by 2026 the AI-tooling landscape has plausibly caught up — tools that do this better and cheaper likely exist already. Negative space is a design choice too. The bundle stays on the shelf as a record of an option deliberately not taken.
• Quantum Analysis (XAI spec) → Quantum Pulse + Quantum Map (sister tools, cross-linked via the Micius live tracker ↔ the BB84/QKD science pin). The May 2025 spec was a single bundle; the May 2026 build is two tools that play to different strengths and point at each other.

The CROSS_SUITE_TODO.md doctrine

The cross-cuts that became consistency rules across the suite: lat/lon I/O consistency (a tool must drink its own output); unified map-layer control (three sheets of paper icon, OSM + Topo + Satellite + opacity sliders); search bar placement (top-right corner of the map area); cursor-pointer everywhere on map surfaces. The discipline that holds the suite together.

On the methodology itself

The nine steps surfaced in this lab were not invented by Claude. They were extracted from the folder by reading the work and asking what pattern produced it. The reader’s test is whether the methodology, applied to a topic NOT in Travis’s wheelhouse, produces a buildable tool. The Act III workbook is the test.
