Four Scales of Magnetism — one dipole, four sizes

Out of the Mag Lab off Orange Ave — the National High Magnetic Field Lab, where the strongest sustained fields on Earth are made and measured. Shamika works one dipole across four scales, from the bar magnet on the desk to the magnetosphere that turns the solar wind aside before it strips the air off the planet. Her whole course is a refusal to let you file those as separate topics: it is one geometry, and the only thing that changes is the size.

Her argument against the way magnetism is taught in slices — magnets here, electromagnets there, the magnetosphere as a special topic in a different course entirely. Her claim is that the slicing creates the confusion: students meet the same dipole four times under four names and never notice it's one thing. Teach the geometry first and the scale second, she argues, and the whole subject collapses into a single, elegant shape. It was never four subjects. It was one field, photographed at four zoom levels.

Her “notebook” is one field that refuses to be four.

Simpson keeps a frequency; Shamika keeps a dipole — the single field geometry that shows up, unchanged, at every scale in the universe. There are no magnetic monopoles; every magnet, from the fleck on your fridge to the shield around the planet, is the same two-poled shape, and her whole method is teaching you to recognize it across a billion-fold change in size. Hand a student the desk magnet and the magnetosphere in the same breath and the confusion evaporates: it's one thing, zoomed. Shamika refuses to teach magnetism in the standard four boxes, and NULL — which prefers one true model to four convenient ones — logged this as unusually principled. Her students, tested at the scale-jumps that trip everyone else, sail through, because she never let them believe the jumps were real in the first place. The magnet and the magnetosphere were always the same object; she just declined to pretend otherwise for pedagogical convenience. NULL Assessment: she deleted three subjects by admitting they were one.
