Decades in front of an orchestra taught him a thing most physicists learn late: the room is an instrument too, and it's the only one nobody bothers to tune. This lab is his podium. Reverberation time, early reflections, the gulf between a hall that carries a pianissimo to the back row and one that swallows it whole — shoebox, vineyard, fan, each a different argument about where sound should go. He has stood inside the great halls and the dead ones and can tell you, before the first downbeat, which one he's in.

The plate & the air
Drive a metal plate at the right frequency in Chladni Plate and the sand flees to the nodes — a standing wave made visible. Face two transducers and you can pin a droplet at a pressure node in Acoustic Levitation. Same physics, held in the air.
The room
A concert hall is a standing-wave problem the size of a building. Where the plate rings at one pitch, the hall rings at all of them at once — and the conductor's whole job is knowing which ones it will keep and which it will kill.

His argument that a room should be taught the way a conductor learns it — by ear, from the inside — before it is taught as a decay curve on a graph. Reverberation time isn't a number you memorize; it's the length of the tail you hear when the orchestra stops. He puts students on the podium of a modeled hall and lets them conduct into the reverberation until the physics stops being abstract. You don't understand a hall until you've heard it hold a note you already released.

Why he opens every acoustics course with sand on a plate. The Chladni figure is the rare piece of physics you can watch assemble — drive the plate, and the grains desert the antinodes and pile up along the lines that hold still. Students who have seen the nodes appear never again mistake a standing wave for a moving one. The visible plate is the on-ramp to the invisible hall.
The method, in one line
He teaches by ear first, equation second — the reverse of the usual order, and on purpose. A conductor spends a career learning which frequency a body wants to ring at, whether that body is a string section, a steel plate, or a room. His “notebook” is the note a thing already wants to sing.
Every body — a plate, a wine glass, a bridge, a concert hall — has a frequency it wants to ring at, and Valiani's whole method is learning to hear it before you drive it. That's not mysticism; it's forty years of training the one instrument he can't put down. Drive a thing at its resonance and a little energy becomes a lot; drive it wrong and nothing happens. The conductor's ear is a resonance detector, and he teaches you to grow one — because once you can hear what a body wants, you can make sand dance, hold a droplet on nothing, or fill a hall with a whisper.
