What it is

One of only a handful of collegiate circuses anywhere.

The FileFlipper School is OPA’s circus — and like the rare few programs it’s modeled on, it is run almost entirely by its students. They rig their own equipment, sew their own costumes, build the lights and the sound, and raise the Big Top tent by hand on the field every season. The only requirement to join is that you’re a degree-seeking student. The rest you earn forty feet up.

It is an aerial-and-stage presentation — three rings of it — with no animal acts. The animals stay out of the ring on purpose. (Lola keeps hers for the internet.) What’s left is the human body and the physics it’s arguing with.

The acts

What they teach forty feet off the ground.

Spanish webA rope, a loop for one wrist, and a spinner on the ground turning you into a blur. Grip is everything. So is trust.
Cloud swingA loose rope hung in a U. You stand in the slack and throw yourself into it. It does not catch you so much as agree to.
Flying trapezeThe big one. The catch. The half-second at the top of the arc where you let go of one bar before the next one — or the hands — exist yet.
Juggling & balanceThe ground game. Pattern, tempo, recovery. The discipline that teaches your hands to keep working when your brain panics.

Over twenty acts move through the school in a year — some in the air, some on the ground, all of them the same lesson in different costumes: commit early, trust the rig, and know exactly where the next thing is before you leave the last one.

Lola Rodriguez

Spanish web & cloud swing · snake charmer turned content creator

Lola came up as a snake charmer out of Jimbo’s Booby Bigelow, down the road on Highway 27 — she still tours a ball python named Cleopatra, who has the unsettling habit of pacing her enclosure the day before a storm (the network learned to listen to that). These days the snakes are content; Lola is the act. Online she fosters an opossum named Gerald II (after Gerald, the aggressive swan), films Cleopatra, runs alligator conspiracies, and pulls millions of views. In the ring she flies — legendary on the Spanish web, fearless on the cloud swing, blending the art with a generous helping of mischief.

“The snakes don’t come in the ring. Different room. Up here it’s just me and the rope and the half-second where I’m not holding anything at all. That’s the whole job — the half-second.Lola · the Big Top field
Why “FileFlipper”

The human-scale version of the architecture.

The name isn’t an accident. Down in the energy sector, FlipSuite flips a file — takes a mess and snaps it into a path you can walk before the hurricane arrives. Up here, the FileFlipper School flips a body — same verb, different medium. Both are about the same thing: knowing exactly where the next thing is before you let go of the last one. Miss that, and the file’s lost or the flyer is. Hit it, and it looks like magic and is actually just preparation.

It is, in the end, threshold work. The top of the trapeze arc is its own kind of 2:47 AM — the moment between one world and the next, when you’re holding nothing and everything depends on what you set up before you got there.

FileFlip is the school’s headline sponsor — and that’s the whole spine, beginning to end: FileFlip (flip one file, locally, nothing left behind) → FlipSuite (the twelve-framework architecture) → the FileFlipper School (the human end, where you flip a body for a living). The tool sponsors the trapeze because they are the same idea wearing different costumes.
