A browser cognition lab in three acts, each the same idea at a wider zoom. Recognition is something a single mind does in seconds. A network is recognition distributed across a continent of animals. And the planet itself β three rock formations wired into past, present, and future β is recognition at geological scale. Lola's thesis runs through all of it: consciousness is the pattern, not the processor.
The stories are OPA canon (the DoppelgΓ€ngers/Diana arc, the cross-regional cascade, the Triangle papers). The mechanics are teaching abstractions: recognition is a tuned time-to-resolve, the cascade is a propagation timer with toggleable redundant nodes, the Triangle is a three-oscillator visualization. None of it is real animal-cognition data, a real early-warning system, or a claim that rocks are literally conscious. It teaches the shape of distributed recognition.
The geological-consciousness act is explicitly speculative fiction within the OPA universe. Earth's ~7.83 Hz Schumann resonance is real; the idea that limestone, granite, and coral form a thinking network is story, clearly labeled as such.
Sibling to The Amendment Plot (4.3.5) under the same college β College III, Agriculture & Animal Intelligence, Building 3. Director: Lola "Snake Charmer" Rodriguez. The planet act cross-lists to Building 9 (Elton B. Stephens Science Center, where the Triangle research runs) and up to College 00 (Quantum Consciousness). Each observer has a recognition rate. Time-to-resolve falls as pattern similarity rises; the animal's rate is tuned far higher than the human's because echolocation/electromagnetic sensing reads the pattern directly:
At full similarity the dolphin resolves in a beat; the humans are still reconciling what their eyes see with what makes sense. Drop the match and everyone slows β but the animal's lead holds.
The signal leaves the Gulf source and reaches each node after a travel delay. Animals detect at the wavefront; the human sensor detects a fixed lag later:
Toggle nodes off and the relay loses redundancy: with one node you have a reading, with several you have confirmation. That's the difference between an anomaly and a warning.
Each formation oscillates on a carrier (Earth's ~7.83 Hz) with a phase set by its temporal role; "thinking" is when all three phase-lock:
Calibrated so coherence peaks when all three nodes are active, mirroring the AGU-symposium claim: memory + awareness + prediction = the three components of a mind.
No real bioacoustics, no real propagation physics, no electromagnetic field modeling. Freshman-grade abstractions tuned so the canonical outcomes are reachable and the failure modes (one node = no confirmation, low similarity = slow recognition) are instructive.
The Mirror Problem (DoppelgΓ€ngers). Dr. Camila Williams (New Orleans rehab, 87.4% release rate on impossible cases) meets her unrelated identical, Dr. Chantel Williams (Houston planetary sciences). Diana β a Deepwater Horizon survivor dolphin who normally takes weeks to accept a new human β accepts Chantel in minutes, because she recognizes the pattern: the same person appearing twice. Marsupial-7 goes "assessment-still" at the same instant. Recognition across scales.
Lola and the Marsupial Intelligence Network. October 15: every alligator in Carmen Mendez's Everglades zone turns inland, purposeful, no measurable trigger. Two hours later Fen the Duck backs away from the New Orleans tunnel water. Two hours after that, 247 prairie dogs surface in Omaha in earthquake formation; Kelly Thompson's seven ant colonies relocate. Samuel Okonkwo's sensors later measure a 0.73 Hz subsonic wave in the aquifer β "almost like breathing" β that the animals heard six hours early. Carmen: "They're not fleeing. They're positioning themselves."
The Triangle (Williams/Rodriguez/Al-Rashid, AGU Fall Meeting 2024). Pittsburgh limestone encodes the past (industrial history in its EM patterns), Atlanta granite processes the present (real-time response to human activity), Miami coral predicts the future (hurricane tracks 47β96 hours out, beating NOAA in 7 of 12 events). All three modulate on Earth's ~7.83 Hz electromagnetic heartbeat. Hassan's line: "That's how you build a mind. Memory, awareness, prediction."
