Her signature pedagogy, against the wall students hit when chemistry and particle physics are taught as separate universes. They are one continuous magnification, she argues — block, element, atom, nucleus, quark, boson — and teaching them as a single zoom keeps a student oriented the whole way down, so the Higgs feels like the bottom of a familiar staircase rather than an alien topic. She teaches the history because the dead ends and the reversals are the method — every generation thought it had hit bottom, and the interesting part is how they found out they hadn't.

Her “notebook” is a child's block that contains a boson.
Others keep an instrument; Yuki keeps a block — a wooden letter-block, the most ordinary object imaginable, which turns out to contain everything. It's her whole method in one toy: the block carries a letter, the letter an element, the element an atom, and the atom keeps going, nucleus to quark to the Higgs that gives it mass, one unbroken zoom from a nursery floor to CERN. She hands students the block precisely because it's familiar — you can't be afraid of the next magnification if you never let go of the last one — and by the time they reach the boson they've never once left the staircase.
