White light enters as one beam. Inside the glass, each wavelength bends differently. Violet is slower — it refracts more. Red is faster — less. Same material, different behavior. That difference is the spectrum.

Convex lens bends light by refraction. Driver’s Mirror shows the same shape language at side-mirror scale — brain reads small-as-far, slider lies about distance. Parabolic Mirror does the same focal trick by reflection — one dish, one focal point, the building block for Tab III. The shape is the lesson at every scale.

Read the history first: this almost certainly never happened. The closest sources to the siege of Syracuse — Polybius, Livy and Plutarch — describe Archimedes' cranes and catapults and say nothing about mirrors; the burning-mirror story first appears with Lucian some three centuries later and is elaborated by Anthemius of Tralles in the sixth. Modern attempts split: MIT students got ignition in 2005 under still air, a static target and a cloudless sky; MythBusters failed three times and called it busted. The optics on this page are real and the geometry is exactly right. The event is a legend. Keep those apart — a mechanism that works is not evidence that a thing occurred.

In the story, Archimedes' soldiers stood on the shore, each holding a polished shield. One shield is a warm spot. The trick was never more light — it was every shield on the same point of the hull. Find a seam, herd the crew onto it. Together: ignition.

WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT

Every pin is a field of mirrors — heliostats — tracking the sun and reflecting beams to a tower receiver.

Same principle as Act III. Archimedes used shields. These plants use computer-tracked glass. The focal geometry is identical.

Steam from the tower drives a turbine. Some plants store heat in molten salt — generating electricity after sunset.

THE PRINCIPLE CHAIN

Photon energy E(eV) ≈ 1240 / λ(nm) — Planck–Einstein (hc ≈ 1240 eV·nm). Glass index vs. wavelength uses the two-term Cauchy relation n(λ) = A + B/λ², with crown-glass-like constants and the slider read as the sodium-D index. The spacing of the fan is computed from those indices, which is why the blues spread and the reds crowd together. What it is not: a full ray trace — the beam is not refracted through two surfaces by Snell’s law, so the fan’s overall angle is a drawing choice while the spacing inside it is physical. Before 23 Sep 2026 the spacing was uniform by list position and the dispersion function was never called at all.
