The Moon Pillar — the sky as predictable geometry
The planetarium's own — astronomy and celestial bodies out of Stephens Science. A moon pillar is exactly his kind of object: no telescope required, just a column of flat hexagonal ice crystals settling horizontal in cold, still air, each one a tiny mirror handing the moon's light straight down to you. Crew teaches the sky as geometry you can predict — halos, pillars, sundogs — the optics that were the first astronomy, readable on the right cold night by anyone shown how to look.

The parking lot
Atmospheric optics: the moon pillar, the 22-degree halo, the sundog. Ice and light doing predictable geometry a few hundred feet up — astronomy you can teach without leaving the ground.

His case for starting the whole subject at ground level. Long before telescopes, people read the sky by the halos and pillars and false suns that ice and light draw overhead — real, predictable, geometric, visible to anyone willing to look up on a cold night. A student who has predicted a moon pillar from the weather and then watched it appear owns astronomy in a way no planetarium slideshow delivers. The sky performs for free; the only ticket is knowing what you're looking at.
Rubble-Pile Worlds: Granular Strength and Why Bennu Was Weak

Co-taught with materials scientist Dan Coner. A rubble-pile asteroid is barely a solid at all — a loose heap of gravel held by microgravity and friction, so weak a spacecraft touching down nearly sank into it. The paper uses Bennu to teach granular strength at planetary scale: how 'a pile of rocks' becomes a world, and how little it takes to come apart.
The method, in one line
He teaches the sky as something you read, not something you're told — from the halo over the parking lot to the gravel heap orbiting the sun. The instinct is the same one Chantel Williams brings to planetary fields: a celestial body is a physics problem you can reason about, whether it's ice crystals or loose rubble, and the wonder survives the explanation.

Rodriguez keeps a feeling; Crew keeps a halo — the ring, the pillar, the false sun that ice crystals draw around a light, on schedule, for anyone who knows the weather that makes them. Astronomy didn't start with a telescope; it started with a person cold enough and curious enough to look up and notice the sky was doing geometry. He teaches students to predict the halo from the humidity and temperature, then walk outside and catch it — because the day you call a moon pillar before it forms is the day the sky stops being decoration and becomes a thing you can read.
