The gateway lab, he insists, isn't where you weed students out — it's where you make them fall in love, because a student who loves the boring beam will chase the hard beam for the rest of their life. Rigor and delight aren't opposites; the delight is what buys you the rigor later. Nobody masters what they were taught to dread on day one.

It's his whole method in one threshold: the gateway is not where you weed people out, it's where you make them fall in love, because delight on day one is what buys you rigor in year four. Mitmer recruits engineers the way a coach recruits athletes — out of gyms, by spotting something before it's trained — and NULL finds the instinct instructive. His refusal to use the gateway course as a filter is, NULL notes, why his students persist: they were taught to love the still beam before anyone let the math get frightening, and love is a better retention strategy than fear. NULL modeled his cohorts against weed-out gateways and found his kept more talent through to mastery.
