The honest premise

Every jolt starts the same “wait, what.” Where it takes you depends on whether it closes.

It started with a nine-foot L.L. Bean boot driving down a highway near Franklin, and a Wienermobile taking two Kansas teenagers to prom. The reaction they cause is strong, reliable, and positive — and the honest question is: what emotion is that, exactly? Is it awe?

The research answers cleanly: no. That’s amusement — and being wrong about it is the fastest way to see what awe actually is. In the studies, amusement isn’t awe’s weak cousin; it’s the control condition, the thing awe gets measured against precisely because they’re near-twins. We started, by accident, at the scientists’ baseline.

Both begin at the same instant — a “wait, what”, a violation of a default you didn’t know you held. The boot breaks “boots are foot-sized.” The canyon breaks “landscapes are human-scaled.” Same opening move. They split on one thing: does the “wait, what” close? Pick a specimen and walk it through.

Read this first · what’s real, what’s framing Every emotion result below is drawn straight from two papers and quoted in Sources: Piff et al. (2015) and the Greater Good / Templeton white paper (Allen, 2018). Two claims here are the builder’s framing, not the papers’ findings, and they’re flagged in place with a framing tag: (1) treating surprise as the shared front door both exits pass through, and (2) the reading that amusement and awe move the self the same direction, different distance. One tempting idea — that amusement makes the self bigger — this data actually contradicts, and the lab says so out loud. This box covers the whole interactive.

Every specimen opens the same “wait, what.” Watch which ones close and file away, and which one stays open — that’s the whole fork.
The hidden flip · the honest correction The neat story is “amusement makes the self bigger, awe makes it smaller — opposite exits.” The data doesn’t support the opposite part. In Piff’s Study 3, the amusement clip nudged the self a real, statistically significant notch smaller too — the “small self” score actually rose (the self felt slightly smaller, not bigger) — just far less than awe. Where amusement actually flatlines is behavior: it didn’t move generosity at all. So the true fork isn’t opposite directions. It’s same direction, different distance — awe drops the self far enough to change what you do; amusement drops it a little and you give exactly as much as before.

Say it out loud walking in: everything here is amusement, not awe. That’s not a demotion. In the studies, amusement is the exact stimulus awe is defined against — positive, incongruity-based, near-identical to awe until the moment it resolves. A real vehicle: a giant duck-boot bolted to a truck chassis. In the summer of 2026 it toured Franklin, Tennessee — Franklin Butchery, Leiper’s Fork Distillery, Hanks Coffee Station — ahead of L.L. Bean’s first Tennessee store opening at CoolSprings Galleria on July 17, and made a stop at a Nashville Sounds game. The “wait, what”: boots are foot-sized; this one seats a driver. It closes the second you think “oh — brand ambassador.” You smile. You file it. No vastness, no small self worth measuring.

The genre’s icon, on the road since 1936. In April 2026 a group of Kansas high-schoolers ditched the limo and rode the Wienermobile to prom — a “limoweenie.” Same fork as the boot: a jolt that lands as delight and closes clean. And notice what closing looks like — getting the joke is faintly self-enhancing (“I caught it, that’s great”). That’s the intuition behind “amusement makes the self bigger” — a reasonable guess that this lab flags as framing, because the measured data leans the other way framing.

Trivia that earns its place: the Planters peanut car was conceived in 1935 — one year before the Wienermobile (1936) — so the peanut technically predates the hot dog. (Honest footnote: it wasn’t continuously running; the modern Nutmobile was revived for the 2002 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, current build 2014.) It sits in the same exit as all the rest: incongruity that resolves into a grin.

The brandmobile has its own institution. The Tour de France advertising caravan — a rolling parade of costume-vehicles — was invented in 1930, and per the Tour’s official site (reported by CNN in 2017), 47% of roadside fans say they come primarily for the caravan, not the race. A stadium’s worth of people, showing up mostly for the amusement. That’s how reliable this exit is — and it’s still the boot, still amusement, still not awe.

The label for this wing This is the control condition. Everything here is amusement. Say it out loud: I’m amused, not in awe — and that’s the correct word, not a failure. An older person at the Wienermobile who says “I’m in awe” is reaching for the wrong word; the right one is “amused.” Making that correction is the lab.

The awe exit — same “wait, what,” but it won’t file away.

Each specimen here is a “wait, what” whose accommodation doesn’t fully close — you stay a little reorganized. The papers define awe by two ingredients together: perceived vastness and a need for accommodation. Miss the vastness and you get surprise; miss the openness and you get amusement. The trap to avoid: thinking the switch is size. It isn’t.

Awe from complexity, with zero bigness. In Piff’s non-nature awe condition, participants watched colored-water droplets collide with milk, shot at 5,000 fps (200× slower than real time) — “minute and intricate patterns.” Tiny, lab-made, invisible to the naked eye, and it produces awe. This one leads the wing because it kills the size myth by itself: vastness is not bigness.

The intuitive fix — “if the boot were 90 feet tall, it’d be awe” — is wrong, and this study is why. Researchers stood people in a grove of eucalyptus exceeding 200 feet (the tallest hardwood stand in North America); the control group looked up at “an adjacent tall building.” The trees produced awe and more helping behavior; the building didn’t. The reason isn’t a height difference — it’s that atypically tall trees violate what you expect, while a campus building, “not atypical from others on campus,” violates nothing. Same setting, opposite emotion, because the tree is a “wait, what” and the familiar building isn’t. (Note: the papers never claim the two were the same height — the switch is the schema-violation, not the feet.)

The fused example: vastness and accommodation arriving together, so you never see the two ingredients apart. That’s exactly why it’s a poor first lesson — it hands you awe pre-assembled. It’s here to be named as the too-easy teacher, the reason the boot (one ingredient, cleanly) teaches better than the canyon (both, fused).

A different flavor of vast: not tall, but far — scale across distance and time. The accommodation that resists closing: “people built this, by hand, over that distance, over that long.” (Flagged as the builder’s framing: the “extent” reading is a reasonable extension of the vastness idea, not a specific Piff/Allen result.)

Your first-ever city skyline open question

Here’s an honest snag the lab refuses to paper over: a building was the awe control in the tree study — so why does the first time you ever see a real skyline seem to land as awe? Candidate answer, offered as a question, not a verdict: novelty — a first-time accommodation gap that habituates with exposure. The tree study used buildings that were unremarkable to those students. A first-ever skyline is not a familiar campus building. Good question. Left open on purpose.

Next time something stops you — a boot on the highway, a canyon, a slow-motion droplet — run these four. They’re pulled straight from the papers, and there are no wrong answers, only honest ones.

If you instantly filed it (“oh, ad car”), that’s amusement or surprise. If part of you is still reorganizing minutes later, maybe awe.

Smaller and quieter points toward awe. Barely-moved points toward amusement. (What it almost never does is get bigger — that’s the tempting story the data doesn’t back.)

Size or complexity or extent — it does not have to be physically big. A droplet counts. A boot doesn’t.

The word test.
The honest word in your mouth: “surprised,” “amused,” or “in awe”? Most brandmobiles are “amused.” That’s the correct answer, not a failure. (“Surprised” means you stopped in the shared doorway — accommodation, no vastness; the word is both the way in and, if nothing follows, where you stay.)

Surprise is the shared front door — the bare “wait, what.” What’s behind it depends on two things: whether the jolt closes, and whether there’s vastness. Closes, no vastness → you smile and drive on (amusement). Doesn’t close, plus vastness → the self goes quiet and you might actually act differently (awe). The boot walks you through the door and right back out. The canyon walks you through and you don’t come back quite the same.
